Upcycling – From Rubbish Bin To Phone Charging Station

March 2024

With around 1.3 million tonnes of rubbish produced each year, no city in Germany produces more waste than Berlin. This figure works out at 400 kg per person per year. Building material, household waste, electronic goods and garden waste are among the most common items disposed of by the Berlin city cleaning company BSR. But wouldn't it be great if we could give lots of our rubbish a second life? That was the aim of this workshop - to come up with ideas and tips about how we can avoid creating so much waste by using some of what we throw out to create brand new items. To start with, research and tests were carried out to improve sustainability and climate-friendly use of our resources. With the expert help of Haus der Materialisierung, Kunst-Stoffe e.V., the participants then set about designing and building an outdoor charging station for their electronic devices complete with seating.
